My work examines how the bible and religion are weaponized by individuals and institutions to legitimize power, oppression, and social control. Informed by my background in graphic design and coming of age during the politically charged 1980s—when art and activism were often inseparable—the work operates as both resistance to religious persecution and a marker of personal and collective liberation.
Using found bibles, I create object-based works that permanently seal the text shut. These acts render doctrine physically inoperative, interrupting its use as a tool to regulate bodies, sexuality, gender, and moral worth—particularly for queer people, women, immigrants, and other marginalized communities. Materials associated with restraint, shame, or control are often repurposed as mechanisms of refusal, containment, and agency.
Before each bible is sealed, a bookmark is placed on a passage that directly contradicts its weaponization—verses grounded in non-judgment and dignity. Preserved but no longer operative, the text shifts from authority to artifact. The resulting objects do not argue for belief or disbelief; they document exposure, refusal, and survival. They stand as contemporary icons of self-authored morality, bodily autonomy, and the right to live beyond inherited systems of judgment.
